Ford Motor Co.’s hiring of Doug Field, a high-profile engineering and product design executive who has led major projects at technology giant Apple Inc. and electric-vehicle leader Tesla Inc., is being touted as a coup for the Dearborn automaker as it repositions for a future defined by electrification and technology.

Field on Tuesday joined the Blue Oval as chief advanced technology and embedded systems officer. He’ll be tasked with leading the company’s design, development and implementation of a next-generation cloud-based technology platform, and he’ll play a major role in delivering the digitally-connected products and services in which Ford sees massive revenue potential. He’ll report directly to CEO Jim Farley and work closely with Hau Thai-Tang, Ford’s chief product platform and operations officer.
